Jan Davison, Bloom program Steering Committee member, community member and pharmacist trainer was invited to speak at the Canadian Foundation for Pharmacy’s annual forum held in Toronto last week.
According to a Pharmacy Practice report the speakers at the event represented patients from a broad range of the most medication-dependent disease states (the patients who visit pharmacies most often). And if there was one overriding message from all, it was that patients are hungry for more person-to-person interaction with their pharmacists, for multiple and various reasons. The ‘elevator pitch’ version: Get to know us a little; and please do it in private.
Jan talked about her experience living with mental illness and the valuable support that pharmacists can provide. She reported back to the Bloom team afterwards: ” The speech went very well indeed. I felt that many people were moved. You could hear a pin drop and everyone was so focused – zero cell phones were out. Reactions were very emotional and people had so many questions about Bloom and many shared their own mental health journeys in private after my speech.”
